Asido Campus Network

Using communication to build awareness, community and support around mental health.

Role
Director, Media and Publicity
Summary
Leading a 50-person team to grow a campus mental health movement, visibility, membership, fundraising and an email community.

The challenge

What needed to change?

Campus mental health advocacy depends on peer participation. Awareness alone does not create a network, people have to join, contribute and stay.

The context

Who was the organisation trying to reach, and why did the work matter?

Students are a fast-moving audience with high turnover. Communication had to be repeatable enough to survive changing cohorts and personal enough to earn membership.

The strategy

What was the thinking?

Pair high-reach awareness campaigns with a durable membership and email layer, so attention had somewhere to go.

Use media partnerships to extend the campus network beyond its own channels.

The execution

What was actually done?

  • Led a team of 50 across media and publicity functions.
  • Ran a World Suicide Prevention Awareness Month campaign.
  • Led fundraising communications for World Autism Day.
  • Built a newsletter programme and grew the subscriber base.
  • Developed media partnerships to widen the network's audience.

What I learned

Movements are built in the layer beneath the campaign. The reach numbers made the case; membership and the newsletter made it last.
