Comic Con Ibadan

Turning community engagement into attendance and audience growth.

Role
Media and Public Relations Director
Summary
A media and community campaign that doubled an event attendance target and built lasting press relationships in the process.

The challenge

What needed to change?

An event with a 500-person target and a community that had not yet been given a reason to show up in person.

Attention online does not automatically become attendance. The campaign had to close that gap.

The context

Who was the organisation trying to reach, and why did the work matter?

Comic Con Ibadan serves a creative and fan community that is highly active online and strongly influenced by peers and by the culture press it already reads.

The strategy

What was the thinking?

Build the audience and the press relationships in parallel, then converge both on a single, concrete action: attend.

Earned media over paid noise, get the event covered where the community already gets its culture news.

The execution

What was actually done?

  • Ran an organic community growth campaign across the event's social channels.
  • Built and maintained relationships with more than 10 journalists.
  • Secured features across Legit, Culture Custodian and Africacomicade.
  • Aligned content and PR around conversion to attendance rather than general awareness.

The results

Documented figures from this engagement.

  • 1,000

attendees attracted, double the original 500-person target

  • 200%

increase in organic followers in three months

  • 5,000

    average impressions generated

  • 100%

    increase in lead conversion

  • 10+

    journalist relationships built

  • 3

publication features secured: Legit, Culture Custodian, Africacomicade

What I learned

A community will show up when the invitation is specific. Doubling a target came from making one action obvious, not from doubling the volume of content.
