Ibadan Bacteriophage Research Group
Making science more visible and engaging to the wider community.
- Role
- Science Communications
- Summary
- Turning specialist bacteriophage research into public conversation through social content and live audio.
The challenge
What needed to change?
Research communities talk to each other fluently and to everyone else rarely. The science was strong; its public presence was not.
The context
Who was the organisation trying to reach, and why did the work matter?
Bacteriophage research sits close to a real public-health question, antimicrobial resistance, which gives it a natural non-specialist audience if the explanation is right.
The strategy
What was the thinking?
Use formats that reward curiosity: short explanatory social content to attract, live audio to deepen, both on a predictable rhythm.
The execution
What was actually done?
- Built and ran the group's social content programme.
- Hosted bimonthly Twitter Spaces sessions.
- Executed a focused awareness campaign.

What I learned
People are not uninterested in science. They are uninterested in being lectured. Change the format and the same subject becomes a conversation.
